Erins Isle v St Mary's

Adult League Division 3

Abbottstown

February 13th 2022

10.30am

Final Score

Erins Isle 1-6

St Marys 2-11

So here we go again for our first full season (fingers crossed) post Covid, Erins Isle had home advantage, but their pitch was unplayable, so we ended up in Abbottstown for our first league game of the campaign.

The forecast was not looking very good, but the rain stayed away and for the most part it was an enjoyable game to watch

The home team registered the first score within the first five minutes and in fairness seemed to settle quicker than us, but we got our passing game going and got a few passes together and despite not getting our first score till the 9th minute it was to be the only time we were to be behind in the whole game. We stuck over three unanswered points and our forwards were starting to find room and the opposition were struggling to cope. They closed the gap to a point, but a good move in the corner brought a save out of their Goalkeeper but Blaine was on hand to place it into the corner of the net, Isle’s replied with a point themselves, but we finished the half with two more points including one from distance from half back Sean Jameson and went in at the break five points in front 1-5 to 0-3

The second half started a bit quieter with a bit of shadow boxing as both teams cancelled each other out but a break down the near right hand side by Eoin had their defence all over the place and a hand pass across the goal found Mick O’Keeffe who rose highest to palm the ball into the net after 40 minutes, we exchanged points and then with 15 minutes to go we opened the door a small bit and they got a scrappy goal from nothing really. But in fairness nobody panicked on our side, and we replied with three unanswered points again including a sweet one off his left from Adam Drewett that crept in close to the right-hand post. They got a couple of points to finish with 1-6 which flattered them a small bit and we got the last two scores to make it an eight-point game at the end.

It was a good run-out and a good start for us too, there will be tougher days to come during the season, but job done for us on Day One

A shoutout on the day to Sean Jameson in particular, he was tight to his man and was up and down the field like all modern-day half backs are these days and even tagged on a point for good measure

Next up is Parnells in Saggart next Sunday morning, thanks for the support see you all then
